SECO-Institute opens the virtual door to our international community to exchange ideas, evaluate the good, the bad and the ugly, challenge the status quo, and share lessons learned.

This time we welcome Erik van Zegveld, the managing director at Highberg, a consultancy firm specialising in digital, organisational, and sustainability transformations.

Erik studied Computer Science at the University of Twente and is currently studying Philosophy at the University of Leiden. This combination, along with over 25 years of experience in consultancy and research, provides him an excellent opportunity to address ethical issues surrounding AI, data, and technology. Erik recently conducted an ethical impact assessment for the municipality of Amsterdam based on the guidance ethics approach, a methodology which involves reaching judgments and measures collaboratively with all stakeholders.

Erik anticipates that all developments regarding AI and the use of data in the coming years will lead to more ethical questions and societal discussions. In addition to the question of whether something is possible and allowed, we increasingly ask ourselves whether we should want it. For example, consider the use of data or AI in decisions regarding whether or not you are entitled to a government childcare benefit or regarding the use of cameras in the public domain. Do the advantages of AI and data weigh against the disadvantages? And how do you weigh this? In this webinar, we will answer these questions and show which methods are available to formulate an answer.
